Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is being invited to watch a musical comedy about his life and loves that will open later this year.

Entitled Jeremy Corbyn The Musical: The Motorcycle Diaries, it will depict the Islington North MP facing a nuclear stand-off with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Already described as “James Bond meets the Karma Sutra” with “more twists and turns than a Jeremy Corbyn reshuffle”, the production features a motorcycle holiday that the politician allegedly took with Hackney MP Diane Abbott in the 1970s in East Germany.

They are by no means the only politicians being satirised. Actors will also be playing Mr Corbyn’s fellow Islington resident London Mayor Boris Johnson, former prime minister Tony Blair and ex-Labour leader Ed Miliband.

The musical is the brainchild of magazine GQ’s political correspondent Rupert Myers and former BBC presenter and author Bobby Friedman, who wrote the script together. Original music has been provided by Jen Green.

Mr Friedman said that a phone-call from his uncle helped germinate the project.

“He called me up after the story about Abbott and Corbyn’s motorcycle trip and said this would be a really great thing to do something with,” he said.

“From there, I spoke to my co-writer Rupert – who I’ve worked with in the past – and we thought it would be funny to do a musical.

“A play can be funny, but I think there’s something particularly hilarious and ridiculous about musicals. They allow you to push the boundaries and be that bit more outrageous and surreal.”

Far from being crude or cruel, the show is expected to feature what the pair describe as “a new, gentler, kinder kind of satire”.

Mr Friedman the show to be popular with residents.

“Without giving too much away, there will be some particularly interesting scenes for people from Islington.”

Will the Labour leader be there on the opening night? “We’re hopeful, but not necessarily expecting him to come,” said Mr Friedman.

Corbyn The Musical: The Motorcycle Diaries will be staged at Waterloo East Theatre between April 12-24.
