A row of run-down terraced houses in Finsbury could be knocked down and turned into up-market flats and shops – but local residents have complained.

The five derelict properties in Whitecross Street are empty and are in a worsening state of disrepair.

Developers want to demolish them and put up a four storey building to house nine one to three bedrooms flats with commercial units on the ground floor, to be used as offices, restaurants or shops.

None of the new flats will be affordable housing.

The houses are in the St Luke’s Conservation Area and the plans say the new building will in a similar style to the properties it is replacing.

But the council has received nine letters of complaint prior to a planning meeting tonight (Thursday.)

They have highlighted a number of concerns, including the increase in height of the new structure, which may block light and impinge on privacy, potential disturbance if a cafe or restaurant opens, and that the new design is not a worthy replacement of the existing terraces. They have also criticised the scale and timing of the council’s consultation.
