As Arsenal fans across the world lick their lips in anticipation at the arrival of midfield star Mesut Özil a famous Holloway food shop has warned he needs to help the team to victory to receive the ultimate accolade.
Piebury Corner in Holloway Road has been the destination of choice for Gooners wanting a tasty treat since it moved in, in November last year.
Famed for its menu board consisting of pies named after legendary former players, owner Paul Campbell told the Gazette the German star would not be celebrated in pastry form.
He said: “We have a very high standard for allowing players to make it onto our legends menu.
“They have to be worthy and with that in mind the next time we add to our board will be for the next captain who lifts a trophy for the Arsenal.
“I really hope it is this year as we are des-pie-rate for a new addition and whoever it is will of course have the honour of having the first taste.”
Mr Campbell, 43, however admitted he was excited to see the ex-Real Madrid maestro who signed for the Gunners on deadline day for £42 million turn out for Arsenal and said he would find another way of fitting him in.
He said: “Mesut is a wonderful player though and we are thinking of marking his arrival with some Öz-tail soup in the winter.”
Despite Mr Campbell’s pledge to not add to the legends’ menu until a new trophy is won, there has been a new addition to the tasty squad.
The Lee Dixon made its debut at the Holloway Road shop on the weekend of the Spurs match but the chicken balti pie, which has been given the seal of approval by the former Gunners right-back, is not a permanent fixture.
All proceeds of the sale of the pie will go towards the charity Homeless FA which aims to tackle homelessness through football.
