EMMANUEL Adebayor was compared to both Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry over the weekend - rich company indeed but a fair reflection on the Arsenal striker's current devastating form.

His double on Saturday made it 21 in total for the season but the more impressive statistic is that the big man from Togo has now scored 11 in his last eight games, and is closing in on a club record for scoring in successive matches.

That currently stands at 10, Ian Wright setting the standard in 1994 when he broke David Jack's landmark of nine that had stood since way back in 1931.

Whether or not Adebayor can score in his next three games to eclipse Wright is debatable, but what is not up for debate is that he is turning into the success story of the season.

Arsene Wenger certainly thinks so: "The biggest compliment I can give him is that he has filled the void left by Thierry," said the Gunners boss this week.

"That is not an easy thing to do because Thierry is a world-class player.

"We don't forget Thierry and what he did for Arsenal but for Adebayor to fill that void is a fantastic achievement."

Adebayor himself has tried to avoid talk of records and the Golden Boot - he currently has 18 Premier League goals, one behind leader Ronaldo - preferring to concentrate on the team ethic that has brought him such success.

On Saturday his attitude was probably typified by the third goal, when he won the ball inside his own half, was fouled laying it off to Alexander Hleb, but still got up and ran fully 60 yards to score from Cesc Fabregas' pass and wrap up the Gunners' victory.

"He has improved his movement off the ball, his finishing, his calmness," added Wenger.

"I don't know if some people have seen when he first came to us he was not really composed in front of goal. Now he is really composed."

Goals in his next three games would break Wright's record - and while that will not be easy against defences of the calibre of Manchester United and AC Milan, you can guarantee Adebayor will certainly not want for trying.
