Islington is playing host to a major street art festival in celebration of the Olympics.

The five-month festival in City Road Basin will showcase collaborative artwork from renowned Czech graffiti artists Point and Pasta Oner, as well as popular UK artist Inkie.

The artwork, created over several days last week, will remain a feature along the canal footpath leading to Stratford, home to the Olympic Village, until the end of the Paralympics Games in September.

Event organiser Renata Clark said: “The opening was exciting, there was a moment of surprise for the public and it was nice to see so many cyclists come along too. We wanted to incorporate colour and interest in the area through an art collaboration between UK and Czech artists.”

The three-day opening invited art lovers to observe the artists at work and they were often seen catching streaming paint from their canvasses as rainfall came at regular intervals.

The artwork was inspired by famous Czech painting Amorpha, Fugue in Two Colours which is in its centenary year and has shaped the design of the Czech Olympic Team outfits.

The event was organised by Czech Centre and Islington Council as part of London’s culture season.
