The Pearlies joined residents to celebrate the reopening of a revamped community centre this week.

The doors to the new-look St John’s Community Centre, on the Elthorne Estate, off St John’s Way, Archway, were flung open last Thursday, when the occasion was marked with an afternoon of food, face painting and bouncy castles.

The centre has been refurbished by volunteers, staff from Homes for Islington, which manages Islington’s housing estates, and maintenance company Kier giving up their time for free.

Homes for Islington chief Eamon McGoldrick said: “The redecoration of this and other community centres would not have taken place in the current financial climate if we had not stepped in.

“This is a great chance for our staff to work doing something they wouldn’t ordinarily do and to make a visible difference locally.”
