Two women miraculously escaped death after they were involved in horror collisions with cars on Saturday morning.

Both Holloway Road and Old Street had to be closed amid fears the victims had suffered life threatening or life changing injuries - but fortunately both are now expected to make a full recovery.

The first incident happened at 3.30am at the junction of Old Street and Singer Street, Finsbury, when a 19-year-old Swedish woman suffered a severe leg injury after she was hit by a car.

Paramedics at first feared she may have to have it amputated and she was rushed to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel for emergency surgery, but doctors now think she should be OK after a few months in plaster.

The westbound carriageway at the junction of Old Street and Great Eastern Street was closed while the ambulance attended.

Less than four hours later at 7.15am in Holloway Road, Holloway, a 29-year-old woman was hit by two cars following a night out on the town.

The woman, who lives in the N1 area of Islington, was struck by the wing mirror of a silver Citroen Berlingo as she crossed the road. That collision sent her careering into the path of a Vauxhall Zafira, which hit her head on.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and she was taken by ambulance to the Royal London Hospital with severe head injuries and suspected internal bleeding.

Police closed a stretch of Holloway Road between the junctions of Drayton Park and Furlong Road for five hours fearing that the accident might be fatal, but amazingly the woman is not expected to suffer any lasting damage.

The cordons were taken out at 1.15pm in time for traffic heading to Arsenal’s match with Sunderland at the Emirates at 3pm.

No arrests have been made in either incident.
