Diamond Jubilee fever swept the borough at the weekend as revellers rolled out the bunting at dozens of street bashes and royal-themed events.

The less-than-ideal conditions could not dampen spirits as residents celebrated the Queen’s 60-year reign in style.

More than 40 roads were closed over the four days, including Claremont Square in Islington, where the crowds were treated to a performance from one of Jessie J’s backing singers.

Party-goer Georgia Sumner said: “I think that people enjoyed it so much that they quite want to hold another one!”

The Mayor of Islington, Cllr Jilani Chowdhury, travelled the length and breadth of the borough to appear at a host of shindigs.

He said: “It’s a great reflection of the borough to see people from all kinds of backgrounds coming together for this celebration.”

Around 50 people turned out for the Wolsey Road party in Newington Green on Sunday, when people were dancing in the rain.

Cllr Catherine West, the leader of Islington Council, who attended a host of parties in Holloway and Archway, said: “It’s really positive to have all these activities for people to do, particularly in the current climate when things are pretty tough out there, the economy is contracting and unemployment is on the rise.

“It’s been really good.”

Cllr Terry Stacy, leader of the opposition Lib Dems, who dropped in on seven parties, including the bash he helped to fund at Highbury Barn, Highbury, said: “This weekend showed what makes Islington so special. It was wonderful to see neighbours coming together to celebrate what is an unbelievable achievement for the Queen.”
