January is normally the time when a flurry of new activities, workshops and classes are showcased for the benefit of those who are suddenly self-conscious about their pouch or their limited language skills.

If, however, you just can’t wait until next year and want to start being fitter, smarter or more creative right now, we have just the thing for you.

On 9 September, Hargrave Hall will be holding a fair for those who know they want to be expand their horizons (or just have more than their commute to discuss at dinner parties) but don’t know where to start.

More than 25 independent teachers will be on hand to show off their subjects and get you excited about finally finding a hobby.

Drum teachers, professional creative writers, laughing yogis and sourdough bakers will be there to give you an intro to their trade – so you’re bound to find your next favourite weekend activity by the time the day’s over.

The Learning Fair will have teachers of German, public speaking and career coaching. There’s something for everyone, and your dinner companions will thank you.

Amongst the professionals showing off their subjects will be Sally Kendall, a Camden-based mosaics artist:

“I started doing mosaics in 2000 and have worked with more than 50 schools through Camden and Islington since.

“I’m still teaching, but I also do a lot of private and commercial work – some of it has ended up at a hair salon on Fifth Avenue in New York!”

Sally’s creations are also scattered this side of the pond; one she’s particularly proud of is a black and white, pop art-style mosaic of Amy Winehouse, which she donated to the singer’s favourite pub, the Hawley Arms in Camden.

She says the most challenging part of her job is working with young people with “very short attention spans – but it’s rewarding: when they start seeing the mosaic coming together they can’t believe it what they’ve achieved.”

Sally offers adult mosaics classes – so give it a go.
