A police car was involved in a road smash this afternoon (Friday) as it answered an emergency call.
The marked vehicle collided with a wall in Essex Road near to the junction with Halliford Street shortly before 1pm.
Two officers who were in the car, a man and a woman, have been taken to hospital and their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Scotland Yard confirmed the vehicle was answering an emergency call, but did not say whether it was speeding or involved in a chase.
Nasreen Halim, who witnessed the aftermath, said: “The police car is really mangled. The bonnet is wrecked and the vehicle is on the wrong side of the road. It looks like there was a chase that has gone wrong. There are forensics officers at the scene now and they have shut off most of Essex Road.”
A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: “A marked police vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision at 12.55am in Essex Road at the junction with Halliford Street. Two police officers who were travelling in the vehicle have been taken to hospital. No other vehicle was involved in the collision. The car was answering an emergency call.”
He added that the incident will be the subject of a Met traffic unit investigation.
