Arsenal has submitted revised plans for a controversial student tower block scheme to planning chiefs.

The Gunners want to build a 16-storey building containing 393 student bedrooms and 56 studio flats on land in Hornsey Road, opposite the Emirates Stadium in Holloway.

The proposals, designed by Ashburton Trading Ltd, also includes the refurbishment of the railway arches adjoining Holloway Road and the refurbishment of an exisiting three storey building to provide retail and commercial units.

A previous application for a red and white coloured 24 to 25 storey, 75 metre high skyscraper, with 450 rooms and a curved roof, was met with widespread disapproval.

Islington Council rejected the plans in September and the developers have since lodged an appeal against that decision.

Islington Green Party member Andrew Myer, who objected to the previous development, said the revised scheme remains inappropriate for such a small piece of land.

He added: “In my personal opinion, I wish that architects didn’t try to make a design statement with everything they do.”

Mr Myer accused the developers of ignoring council policy limiting new buildings to a maximum of 10 storeys in an attempt to “squeeze as much profit as possible out of a tiny site.”

Members of the public have until next Friday (March 16) to comment on the planning application, which can be viewed at www.islington.gov.uk
