The leader of Islington Council has urged Mayor of London Boris Johnson to step in and prevent the eight-month closure of Caledonian Road Station.

The Underground station is currently scheduled to shut between March and October for lift repairs.

Thousands of commuters have signed petitions against the Transport for London (TfL) plans, arguing the lifts can be repaired one at a time in order to keep the station open.

In the letter to Mr Johnson, who is also TfL chairman, Cllr Richard Watts urged him to instruct a programme of works that would avoid closure.

Cllr Watts also called for the mayor to address concerns about lack of consultation over the closure and failure to consider Arsenal match day travel.
