A group of youngsters will take the reins of power at the town hall on Friday.

The event, part of a national initiative, will see members of Islington’s Youth Council step in for their grown-up counterparts.

Uouth mayor, Hiba Warsame, will take over from Lesley Seary as chief executive - and lead a tour of housing services, before hosting meetings later in the day.

Meanwhile the deputy youth mayor, Shanaz Shaw, will fill in for Islington Council’s executive member for children and families, Cllr Joe Caluori.

She’ll visit a local primary school and local charity, Let’s Get Talking, to discuss the issues young people face, especially around youth provision, health and crime.

Miss Warsame said: “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity and responsibility of leading the council for a day.

“I want to make sure the importance of good youth services in Islington is heard by as many people as possible, and will use the day to highlight this.

“I’m showing that young people have what it takes to be leaders and can make decisions about what matters to us.”

Cllr Joe Caluori, Islington Council’s executive member for children and families said: “This is a great initiative to give young people a chance to shadow jobs and experience making decisions.”
