A school will be inviting the wider community to grow food in their gardens after a new cabin was opened last week.

The site at Pooles Park Primary school in Lennox Road, Finsbury Park, was funded by a 95,000 grant from the Big Lottery’s Local Food Scheme and was opened by MP for Islington North, Jeremy Corbyn, last week.

The aim of the development is to expand the school’s existing eight-year food growing and environmental education project to include the wider community, with workshops for the public being held.

The project aims to provide an accessible organic growing space, particularly for people who don’t have access to a garden.

Environmental tutor Sophia Ioannou said: “I’m happy to welcome as many people as possible to Pooles Park’s greenspace. Many of us do not have the opportunity to get in touch with nature because we live in flats without gardens.

“Growing food helps children develop a respect for plants and animals and also encourages teamwork.”
