An art exhibition showcasing the cream of Islington’s artistic talent is hoping to make a splash when visitors view their quirky presentations.

Islington Exhibits, run by the Rowan Arts Company, in Mayton Street, Holloway, has a host of innovative works, including a sound piece which requires people to submerge themselves in a swimming pool.

From Monday to July 31, the event will be held in more than 35 locations across the borough including cafes, bars, libraries and the newly re-furbished Ironmonger Row Baths, in Norman Street, Finsbury.

‘Rich pool’

In its fourth year, the event is funded by Arts Council England and the Cripplegate Foundation, and features a series of free walks, talks and exhibitions.

More than 100 Islington-based creative-types will have their work on display and programme curator Shiri Shalmy says that without events like this, artists find it very hard to find recognition for their work.

She said: “There is an enormous amount of graduates all looking for places to showcase their work and there are also all the other artists in the area who need exposure. It can be very tough.

“Islington is an area with such a rich pool of artistic talent, we’re here to create connections and give them that bit of help needed.”

Among the interesting works are pieces by people who have experienced mental illness, selected by the curators to raise awareness and give the people affected a platform to express themselves.

Giving artists of all backgrounds a voice is an important part of the event, with an emphasis on promotion of them and the borough very much at the heart of what Islington Exhibits is about.

Ms Shalmy said: “How many times can you say you took a towel to an art gallery?”
