Restaurant review: Homa, N16
Whenever I wander down Stoke Newington’s Church Street of an afternoon I always see Homa chock full of smiling faces enjoying a bite, so it was with some relish I finally headed in one Sunday lunchtime.
It sits just across from Abney Park Cemetery, and our table at the window afforded us a lovely view of folk to-ing and fro-ing on their weekend excursions.
The place was busy, but not packed, with an easy mix of couples, families and groups of friends enjoying a snack.
Despite the brunch menu looking very tempting, we opted for a two-course luncheon. First up was the marinated artichoke with serrano ham, which was fine but eclipsed by the fantastic chicken parfait, which was deliciously smooth and with the tangy onion and sourdough biscuits had layers of different flavours and textures.
For the main, we had braised venison, which was tender and came with a rich, smoky-tasting sauce that mingled perfectly with the moist, salty polenta – very satisfying.

To accompany all this, we had a great bottle of organic Syrah and polished this off in place of a dessert while mulling over a thoroughly satisfying way to spend a Sunday afternoon. With quick, friendly service and a varied and tasty menu, no wonder I always see the place so busy.
