It has now been nearly three years since the tragic death of Islington community campaigner Lisa Pontecorvo.

Yet, despite promises from the Mayor of London and the council to take swift action to make safe the junction of Holloway Road, Madras Place and Fieldway Crescent work has still not started. The public consultation last November showed overwhelming support for the planned improvements at this junction. The last we heard as local councillors was that work would start in February or March – but it now looks like work won’t start for a while now.

This is one of the busiest junctions in the borough with a busy London Cycle Network route crossing one of London’s busiest roads. It is also highly dangerous with traffic on Holloway Road often obscuring the view across the jagged junction between Fieldway Crescent and Madras Place. It is also dangerous for pedestrians who can only cross safely in one place after waiting a long time for the lights to change.

Transport for London and the council need to stop blaming each other for the delays. Two years to come up with a plan and nearly three years to get it built is more than enough. – Councillor Julie Horten, Liberal Democrat, Highbury East ward.
