Supermarket giants Sainsbury’s are appealing a decision by Islington planners stopping them from opening a second Local store in Blackstock Road.

Campaigners were celebrating in February after their campaign opposing the plans for the old Highbury Vale police station seemed to have worked, though some were apprehensive about an appeal.

And they were right. Despite council officers saying the store would “adversely impact the vibrancy of Finsbury Park town centre” the firm is back again.

And this time a decision will be made by the Planning Inspectorate, an independent regulator.

Campaigners, who fear the shop would drive local traders out of business, have rallied the troops for more action. They told Sainsbury’s: “The Blackstock Road community is not happy that you are using your corporate power to try to over turn local democratic process. We, the community object.”

They have until July 19 to let their feelings be known.
