Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey produced a nonchalant penalty for Wales in their World Cup qualifier against Serbia in Belgrade.

Midfielder Ramsey netted with a ‘panenka’ style spot-kick, in the very same stadium where it was first successfully attempted by Antonin Panenka, for Czechoslovakia against West Germany in the 1976 European Championship final.

But Ramsey’s 35th-minute strike was not enough to secure victory for Wales, as Aleksandar Mitrovic levelled for the home side from close range, although Arsenal’s FA Cup matchwinner saw a late near post effort well saved by Vladimir Stojkovic.

Euro 2016 semi-finalists Wales remain third in Group D, four points behind Serbia and the Republic of Ireland with four matches remaining in the race for Russia.

Shkodran Mustafi was also on target in the latest round of qualifiers, scoring for Germany in their 7-0 rout of Group C minnows San Marino.

Mustafi netted his second goal for his country early in the second half, as a deflected shot found the bottom corner of the net.

Previous Arsenal transfer target Julian Draxler was also on the scoresheet for the World Cup holders, as Sandro Wagner hit a hat-trick and Amin Younes and Julian Brandt also struck.

Granit Xhaka gave Switzerland the lead in their 2-0 win over the Faroes Islands in Group B.

The midfielder made space for himself just outside the box and fired a low shot into the corner of the net just before the break.

Stoke’s Xherdan Shaqiri added a second goal after the restart to maintain Switzerland’s 100 per cent record.

Meanwhile, striker Olivier Giroud maintained his fine form for France with a superb volley against Sweden in Stockholm, as Laurent Koscielny also played the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 defeat.

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny was in the starting line-up for Egypt as they lost 1-0 to Tunisia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The only goal of the game was scored by Taha Yassine, just after half time, as he finished from close range following good work by Youssef Msakni.

Tunisia had hit the post early on through Seyam Ben Youssef, while Abdallah El-Said had the best chance for Egypt but chipped just off target.
