Transport bosses are driving through with changes to the Archway bus network – ignoring 75 per cent of the people whose opinion they asked.

Transport for London (TfL) held a public consultation in January over route changes and the moving of stops caused by the major work to the gyratory.

The bottom of Highgate Hill is being closed to motor traffic to make the area more cycle friendly, but most of the 818 respondents were against the bus changes.

Despite that, TfL, which had planned to publish its response to the survey in May, sent out emails yesterday telling people it was going through with the work – and it would be starting next week.

That means up to 50 buses an hour will soon be making U-turns in Archway Road. Stop X will move further up the road, while the northbound stop G and southbound stops K and L will be removed.

The alighting stop in MacDonald road is also going in the reshuffle, and the stands in Vorley Road are being moved to Archway Road and MacDonald Road.

Jenny Thompson of nearby Hazellville Road campaigned against the plans and said the community was staggered by the news.

“It’s completely outrageous,” she said. “There’s no explanation at all about it and to tell us four days before they are due to start it shows what contempt they have for us.

“Air pollution will be off the scale, people are going to have to walk more to the Whittington Hospital stop and the main thing is buses are going to be turning in Archway Road, which will cause mayhem.

“Nobody is surprised, but 75 per cent of people objected and for them to just coolly say they are going to do it is outrageous.”

Just 23 per cent supported, or partially supported, the proposals.

Despite an alternative proposal from the Vorley Road Children’s Centre, the possibility of a right turn from St John’s Way was dismissed.

TfL did however say it will look into extending routes to serve Upper Holloway station and Whittington Hospital.

“Having reviewed the detailed comments provided by respondents, we have decided to proceed with the proposed changes,” an email from Matthew Hedges of the consultation team reads.

“These will be implemented in time for the change-over to the new two-way traffic system at Archway, which is expected to happen on the weekend of December 17.

“We have looked carefully at what those who opposed the changes told us. As a result, we are considering extending certain bus routes to serve locations such as Upper Holloway station and the Whittington Hospital.”
