The Pet Shop Boys and renowned choreography Javier De Frutos premiere their brand new ballet THE MOST INCREDIBLE THING. But does this mixed media flight of fancy live up to its name?
METROPOLIS meets The Village People in this latest contribution to the two hundred years overdue ballet renaissance.
The Pet Shop Boys and choreographer Javier De Frutos have joined forces to create a brand new ballet, based on a little known Hans Christian Andersen fairy story.
If this was not radical enough, The Most Incredible Thing, is also choc-a-block full of graphic design, animation, art installation, film footage and of course a bit of pop music.
The story follows a king who will give half his wealth and the hand of his daughter to the inventor of the most fantastic object - cue a televised talent show complete with three vodka-swilling judges.
Occasionally the story struggles to be heard in the flurry of mixed media, but this is a brave new show that propels a traditional art form into the 21st century.
The choreography is beautifully fluid throughout and the cast do not put a bare foot wrong, although a bit of pointe work would have been nice.
The ballet renaissance continues a pace, so go see it quickly - before Dorothy Perkins runs out of crossover cardigans.
