Thirty-five people flee fire in Islington

THIRTY people fled their homes when a flat in their four-storey block went up in flames early this morning.

A man and woman escaped the second-floor flat where the blaze erupted in Wynford Road, Islington, at about 12.50am this morning, before four fire engines arrived at the scene.

Twenty firefighters took nearly an-hour-and-a-half to get the flames under control.

The flat was completely ravaged, and the fire spread to a property on the floor above, causing some damage, before it was contained.

Neil Cash, watch manager at Euston fire station, who attended the incident, said: “Our crews worked really hard to get the fire under control and prevent it from causing any more damage.”

Three people were taken away in ambulances, and one was treated for burns at University College Hospital, in Euston.

Crews from Euston, Clerkenwell, Holloway and Kentish Town attended and the fire’s cause is under investigation.
