The tiny Sylvanian Families toyshop in Finsbury Park is a favourite haunt for children who come to spend their carefully saved pocket money on the miniature animals.

And with Easter approaching, the shop – which has been trading for 23 years – will be welcoming more visitors than usual.

In preparation, staff have decorated the store in Mountgrove Road specially and will be offering their young customers the chance to win prizes.

“We’re holding a ‘spot the Easter egg’ competition where the children count how many glittery Easter eggs are hidden in the display cases,” said Ben Miller, who works in the shop.

Children will also get the chance to get their photo taken next to a giant Sylvanian Easter bunny – a metre-tall version of Freya Chocolate, one of the brand’s best-selling figures.

But in an age where children spend their free time glued to computer screens, how has the shop managed to stay in business?

“Being traditional hands-on toys, they enable children to immerse themselves into the world of Sylvania without the need for an app or tech device to provide the backdrop,” said Ben.

“We tend to find parents appreciate this more and more in a time when tech toys and electronic games are becoming commonplace.”

They are also affordable.

“Our figures start as cheap as £3, so we often get children saving up their pocket money and shaking out their piggy bank for a hedgehog baby or cow twins,” says Mr Miller. “It helps them understand the value of money.”
