Council leader Richard Watts has hit out at TfL for failing to install anti-suicide measures at Archway Bridge after a man fell to his death last week.

Emergency services were called to Archway Road just before 3.30pm on Thursday and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Campaigners have fought for 12 years to get fences installed on the bridge and TfL had plans for a 3.1-metre steel fence signed off by both Haringey and Islington Council in October 2015. A fence was trialled early last year but problems with its design meant it didn’t become permanent.

Cllr Richard Watts, said: “I send deepest sympathies to the family of the person who died.

“It is simply unacceptable TfL has not managed to do what is necessary for the safety measures to be installed. Planning permission was granted in October 2015 and I am furious these vital safety measures have not been put in place.”
