A TOWPATH ranger has been appointed to keep the peace down on the Regent's Canal in Islington. Since January 2008, more than 10 incidents involving cyclists crashing into pedestrians at speed have been reported to British Waterways.
With eco-conscious cyclists taking to the canals and many people taking up jogging by the water, the number of more low-level clashes on the towpath has also soared.
New ranger Joseph Young, whose former job involved mediating between feuding neighbours, is hoping to calm things down.
He said: "Sometimes it just takes a third party to remind people about the code of conduct and to encourage people to think about how their actions may affect others to get them to change their behaviour.
Speeding cyclists are giving other riders a bad name so part of my role will be to educate these few and encourage other users to share the towpath amicably.
