Apart from the odd bird tweeting and the crickets chirping, all I could hear was the gentle rippling of water as I glided through our private swimming pool.

Nestled in a former six acre Majorcan vineyard against a striking mountain backdrop, our holiday at this exclusive villa on the rural northern tip of the island was, quite simply, serenity encapsulated. There was not another soul in sight.

It therefore wasn’t easy to drag ourselves away from this blissful retreat – called Cana Siona – at all during our seven night stay, but to do so brought rewards in different forms.

A short drive through sweeping countryside dotted with rustic farmhouses and haybales took us to the pretty ancient old town of Pollença which, like the location of our villa, dispelled any images of brash holiday resorts a mention of this Balaeric island can often conjure up.

Instead of neon signs and loud bars, the cobblestone town is a glamorous, picturesque place with a beautiful church square lined with upmarket restaurants and wine bars. We enjoyed two fine meals here during the holiday, sitting outside soaking up the buzzing atmosphere as the sun set over this beautiful place.

At Pollença’s port, where you’ll find most of the hotels, there are also some nice restaurants with good tapas offerings, as well as a sweeping golden sand beach with shallow water, should you grow tired of lazing around the pool.

Or for those feeling a little more active, a walk up the steep main street, Puig de Pollenca, in the old town which takes you to an old Medieval monastery dating back to 1348 – with views across the mountains to the Mediterranean beyond.

Another short drive away is Alcúdia which, like Pollença, offers a stunning beach, as well as a historic town to explore – only this time on a bit of a larger scale. The old town is surrounded by an impressive Medieval wall and markets are held there several days a week, while plenty of restaurants can be found around the marina in Port d’Alcúdia.

The Mediterranean sun beamed down on us throughout our stay, and with the Majorca being just a little more than two hours from London with a comfortable and efficient direct Monarch Airlines flight, it was a seamless and stress free journey there and back.

The villa itself, which is about a 20 minute drive from Palma airport (car hire is essential), is the epitome of luxury and the best equipped self catering holiday home I’ve ever stayed in.

Once you’re through the gates, a long tree-lined drive leads up to its impressive rustic stone façade with pillared entrance, surrounded by lush manicured lawns.

Inside there’s tall ceilings, white marble floors and an open staircase leading to three of four bedrooms – all with en suite bathrooms and balcony terraces with sumptuous furniture on which you can sit and admire mountain views or the vista out to the sea from the front.

While we did venture out a few times, the beauty of having our own private villa was the fact that we could lounge around in the sun all day until sunset, and then hop across to the patio for a barbecue feast and an evening sipping wine.

All to often on holiday, the rigmarole of coming off the beach and getting ready for an evening out can become a regime of its own, which is why this break was so relaxing.

And the produce we’d found in the local supermarket was delicious – juicy king prawns, divine fresh fillets of fish and lovely fresh vegetables – while the wine was good and beyond reasonable in price.

Casa Siona has everything you could possibly need for a luxurious and relaxing holiday, while its location in this quiet and picturesque tip of Majorca is a destination which will enthrall you.

I can honestly say I have never before found a break so unwinding.
