The Eagle, in Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell, and The Albion, in Thornhill Road, Barnsbury, have won acclaim for the quality of their food in the Old Speckled Hen Top 50 Gastropubs Awards 2010. The Eagle is generally accepted as being the countrys first ever gastropub, and has gone from strength to strength since it opened in 1991. Among the favourites on head chef Ed Mottershaws menu are the steak sandwich and the Portuguese custard tart. The Albion is best known for its delightful beer garden - probably the second biggest in Islington behind The Canonbury - but head chef David Johnson is drawing in more and more punters for the food. Amongst his speciality dishes are the confit duck leg with braised red cabbage, fondant potatoes and red wine jus and the oven cheeseburger with chips. The two Islington pubs were chosen by a poll of more than 700 food writers, chefs, pub guide editors, industry chiefs and food operators.
