Dirty nappies also found – culprits face eviction

Soiled condoms and nappies carelessly thrown out of windows onto a children’s play area have shocked residents on a Finsbury Estate.

People living in President House, on the King’s Square Estate, off Lever Street, were disgusted to find unhygienic waste was being strewn over their public garden.

A town hall warning letter branded the practice “unfair” and ”dangerous” and warned those responsible could face being kicked out of their homes.

One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “I was really shocked when I got the letter. Kings Square is a nice estate and we have lots of kids here. It’s horrible to think that the little ones could be picking up dirty nappies or even worse. You just don’t expect it to happen round here.”

In a letter to residents, Islington Council officer Keiron Duncan said: “It has come to my attention that residents are throwing rubbish, including nappies, condoms out of their windows.

“From the location we are finding the nappies, condoms, that are thrown in the residents garden on the ground floor, which is unfair... [and] can be dangerous if items as mentioned is being thrown out of windows we must prevent incidents where a child/toddler could end up in hospital if objects are falling and picking up something that could surely affect the child.”

He adds: “It is a criminal offence to leave household waste in the street outside authorised collection days times and locations.

“Islington will be monitoring the situation, and are treating this issue extremely seriously and will be targeting individuals living in the block who are caught continuing with this behaviour.”

Those breaching the conditions of their tenancy could find the council repossessing their home, he says.
