Waiting to see if death brings crossing update

THE letter from Sara Burns (Viewpoints, Gazette, September 18) shows a common misunderstanding of the cycle crossing in Holloway Road from Madras Place to Fieldway Crescent.

Northbound drivers who move off when cyclists are crossing with their green light are not doing anything illegal because there is nothing to tell the drivers that the cycle crossing is in operation.

There is only one set of traffic lights for northbound drivers who may be from anywhere in the world (this is the A1 we are talking about). That has been the position ever since the cycle crossing was created and local cyclists have complained before. The only improvement was the yellow box on the road.

Transport for London (and the Highways Agency before) has rejected any changes and we always thought it wouldn't change the layout until someone was killed there. Lisa Pontecorvo has been killed but is that enough? She was trying to cross on foot at a point with no pedestrian crossing. TfL can go on blaming the victims, both the cyclist and the lorry driver.

It will cost a lot to alter the layout of lights at that crossing and TfL wouldn't spend what is required. We wait to see if this death is enough to change its mind. - Adrian Williams, Gibson Square, N1.
