SEVERAL of our members have said how much they have been admiring and enjoying the beautiful baskets of flowers hanging from lamp-posts along Holloway Road. They really brighten an otherwise quite dreary stretch of highway.
By contrast, what a sorry sight are the flowerbeds behind the war memorial ring on Islington Green. None too colourful, even when in full bloom, the flowers are already drooping and withered. The excellent gardeners who planted the flower baskets could surely arrange a far more attractive show in this popular central location.
Islington's war heroes are mainly commemorated in November on Armistice Day - but since plans take time to grow, one needs to plan the background to the memorial some months earlier. This would also allow time to make a long hoped for improvement to the war memorial in the archway beside the old Northern Hospital; to pick out the names of the fallen inscribed on its walls in gold (or even black) paint. Until this is done they remain almost impossible to decipher.
