While the Government looks at how it can reform Labour’s licensing laws (Viewpoints, October 28) there are issues the council already has the powers to deal with.

Since being elected in May, I have been contacted by many residents about the number of premises with late licences in the Upper Street and Essex Road area. Residents are concerned about the knock-on effect of late licences on their right to peace, litter and anti-social behaviour.

Last month Liberal Democrats launched a petition calling on the council to consider a saturation zone around Upper Street and Essex Road. This would allow the council to limit new applications for alcohol licences in the area in future and require every new applicant to make a special case as to why he should have a licence. We have already received more than 500 signatures. This is clearly a huge issue for residents around Upper Street and they are saying “enough is enough”.

While we all appreciate that it is great to have the range of restaurants, bars and pubs in Upper Street and Essex Road, it is time for the council to think about the residents too. I hope the Labour council will support my petition. – Councillor Susan Buchanan, Liberal Democrat, St.Mary’s ward, Town Hall, Upper Street, N1.
