USERS of the Ashley Road day centre were surprised to learn that it has been saved ("Mental health centre saved", Gazette, September 18). The council may have decided to keep the building open, but they still intend to lock many of us out from a place we feel is our home.
At a recent meeting at Hanley Road, a council official told us they intend to reduce the staff once building works are completed in 2009. Less staff will mean that less users are allowed in.
That the council wants to call this a "satellite" service makes us wonder what planet they're on. We may have mental health problems, but we are not so easily fooled. It's not a satellite service that they're planning, but a skeleton service next year.
Councillor Andrew Cornwell stuck his neck out for us because of his conscience. All we ask is that the other Islington councillors give us a written guarantee that the centre will remain open and fully staffed when the headlines have faded. - Peter Djerkallis, N5.
