Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says his team want to do well again at Anfield when they take on Premier League rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

The Gunners lost 1-0 at Stoke last weekend, despite having 77 per cent possession, but have won two and drawn two of their last six matches against the Reds on Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp’s men drew at Watford on the first day of the season, then edged past Crystal Palace last weekend before securing their place in the Champions League group stage against Hoffenheim on Wednesday night.

Wenger said: “There are good memories and bad memories some times, but overall we have done well at Anfield and we want to do well again.

“The mood is determined and focused and in a preparing mode for our next game.”

“It’s too early. Tottenham and Chelsea played against each other so somebody had to drop points, I think Everton got a surprising result at City with a quality game.

“On our side, we dropped points we should not have dropped at all at Stoke, with all the history, 77 per cent possession and a huge number of goal chances.

“Overall it’s too early to come to any conclusion.”

Wenger was also asked at his press conference about the situation surrounding Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho, who is a reported target for Barcelona following the world record transfer of Neymar to Paris St Germain.

The Catalan club were rumoured to be ready to make a final £135million bid and Wenger could empathise with opposite number Klopp given the speculation surrounding his own star Alexis Sanchez.

He added: “Every situation is different. It depends what has been agreed sometimes between you and the players so it’s very difficult for me to interfere in that because I don’t know what’s happening between Coutinho and Liverpool.

“I have enough to deal with my own situations here and I don’t know where he stands. I’m not even sure that Barcelona is in for him, I don’t know. It’s always difficult because you want your players to be happy, but the players have contracts.

“In general you want the players to stay with that club when they have contracts but every situation is different and you have to know really, internally, what is going on.”

Arsenal have faced having to sell the likes of key men Patrick Vieira, Cesc Fabregas, Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie down the years, but Wenger stressed no single player is bigger than the club.

He said: “I had to deal many times in my life with big departures of big players and I always focus more on the team.

“To deal with all the rest, no matter what, Arsenal is important and the team. Of course you want to keep your best players but if it happens, you have to find a way to survive at the top level and make the team efficient.

“You don’t focus too much on individual players you focus on how the team can be strong enough to deal with what can happen.”
