ARSENAL fans are among the healthiest in the Premiership, according to research by the NHS.

An online survey of 25,000 football fans by NHS Choices has found that almost two thirds of Gooners - 64 per cent - are a healthy weight.

No other London club has fitter fans, with only Blackpool boasting trimmer supporters in the top flight.

The survey assessed the health and fitness of fans of all 20 Premiership football clubs based on weight, smoking and alcohol consumption.

North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur came tenth in the NHS league table, with almost 45 per cent of fans being an unhealthy weight.

But more Spurs fans than any other London club drink within the daily recommended limits, according top the research.

Public health minister Anne Milton said: "Over the summer players such as Spain's Cesc Fabregas, Germany's Jerome Boateng and Argentina's Carlos Tevez dazzled the world with their skill and ability to play high tempo football in South Africa.

"Watching these world-class players ply their trade in Premiership will hopefully inspire young people to get active and start eating a healthy diet."

The NHS spends £4.2billion a year treating diseases caused by excess weight.
