Arsenal head to Millwall Lionesses for their latest FA Women’s Super League Contintental Tyres Cup tie tonight (Wednesday).

The Lionesses roared back from two goals down to defeat London Bees 3-2 in FA WSL 2 last weekend but host a Gunners side that opened their cup campaign with a 7-0 win over the same side last month.

A brace from Charlotte Devlin and winning strike from Ashley Hincks saw Millwall turn their clash with the Bees at the Hive on its head and keep them top of the FA WSL 2 table.

Unbeaten in the league so far, the Lionesses’ only defeat in all competitions came in the opening round of the Continental Tyres Cup when they were edged out 1-0 by Watford.

Meanwhile, Arsenal sent out an ominous warning to the Group One South rivals when they comfortably saw off the Bees on October 12 and they also picked up a vital victory in FA WSL 1 last weekend, with Vivianne Miedema and Beth Mead scoring as they won 2-0 at Everton.

The two sides last met in the very same competition in September 2015, with the Gunners running out 4-0 winners at the Den as they marched on towards Continental Tyres Cup glory.

Danielle Carter, Rachel Yankey, Chloe Kelly and Dominique Janssen got the goals for Arsenal, who had also beaten the Lionesses 7-0 in the SSE FA Women’s Cup just five months earlier.

Striker Mead, who joined at the start of the year, is bang in form and the 22-year-old England youth international was on target against the Toffees last weekend, following up her brace against the Bees in the game previous, tying her with Jodie Taylor – top-scorer at the Women’s European Championship in the summer – and Emma Mitchell at the head of the Arsenal goalscoring charts.

Millwall manager Lee Burch said: “I wasn’t here for the last game against Arsenal but the big thing going into Wednesday is we have a lot of injuries – we need for a few to come back.

“We’re missing at least four or five. It is going to be such a tough game, and even more so when we’re going into three games in eight days.

“The girls have the character to get through it and as a staff, we just have to rock on.

“The Arsenal game is one we look forward to. It will be an opportunity to play some younger players.

“I did it against Watford and I will do it again. We will continue to use the cup like that but the Arsenal game will also be a challenge, a chance to play against some top sides.”

Arsenal midfielder Jordan Nobbs said: “We carry a threat going forward. We have got a lot of forward players and we have had a formation change, and we are still getting used to it.

“Overall, we have got our strikers scoring goals and creating chances, and that is the most important thing.

“I hope to add more goals this season. With the change in formation, I do not always get as high as I would like to but I want to be scoring goals.

“I had a happy and positive Spring Series, so I am hoping that there is more to come from me.”
