Joe Montemurro takes charge of his first game as Arsenal manager as his side return to FA Women’s Super League action against Liverpool on Sunday.

The 48-year-old Australian, formerly boss of Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City, succeeded Pedro Martinez Losa, who departed the Gunners in October and his first challenge is a crucial clash in FA WSL 1.

Having both most recently been in FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup action, Arsenal, who are third, host fourth-placed Liverpool as the league programme gets back under way.

Jodie Taylor hit a brace as Arsenal humbled Watford 6-0 in their last outing, with fellow England striker Danielle Carter, Emma Mitchell, Dominique Janssen and Danielle van de Donk all also on the scoresheet.

However, that victory took place on November 16, meaning the Gunners won’t have been in action for nearly three-and-a-half weeks when they face Liverpool.

Conversely, Scott Rogers’ Reds saw a run of five wins in all competitions come to an end as they were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland in the cup, the Black Cats pipping them to top spot in Group One North.

These two teams served up a cracker when they met in the Spring Series in May.

Chloe Kelly’s effort was cancelled out by Alex Greenwood, Natasha Harding and Caroline Weir as Liverpool took a 3-1 lead, but the Gunners then turned the game on its head.

Carter’s brace and a goal from Jordan Nobbs looked to have given Arsenal all three points but then Gemma Bonner’s late header ensured the contest finished 4-4.

Arsenal midfielder Leah Williamson said: “Confidence is high in the camp. We’ve just brought in the new manager, so I can’t wait to get started with him.

“I think that will only push us on. We’ve got so much talent in our squad but that just needs to come out on the pitch now.

“We’re really looking forward to the Liverpool game.

“It’s the first time we’ve brought one of the big teams back to Borehamwood this season, so it will be good to put on a good show in front of our fans.

“It’s so important for us to get all three points. We’ve got our eyes on the prize.

“We haven’t had the greatest of starts in terms of the season, so we need to make sure we’re not dropping anymore points now and that is in the forefront of people’s minds.”
