Jordan Nobbs scored twice as Arsenal beat Yeovil on Wednesday night to continue their stunning start to the season and climb to the top of the FA Women’s Super League table.

Beth Mead, Katie McCabe, Vivianne Miedema, Dominique Bloodworth and Kim Little also netted as the Gunners took their league tally to 12 goals scored and none conceded from two games.

The heavy victory came just days after they beat Lewes 9-0 in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup but Yeovil’s wait for a first win of the season continues.

The Gunners started the game on the front foot and took the lead inside five minutes as Little found Nobbs, whose shot nestled into the bottom left-hand corner of the net via a deflection that wrong-footed goalkeeper Megan Walsh.

Arsenal should have doubled their advantage as Mead ran through on goal but she could only flash a shot wide as many expected the net to bulge.

On 20 minutes, Mead did extend the visitors’ lead, converting from close range after a corner was not cleared as her swivelling shot just crossed the line, despite the best efforts of a last-ditch defender.

It was 3-0 on 52 minutes as a delightful flick by Nobbs fed substitute McCabe who made no mistake one-on-one as she fired past Walsh.

And two minutes later Miedema made it four despite the best efforts of Walsh, who got a hand to her effort but could only help the ball into the top corner.

Arsenal looked dangerous every time they broke forward and Miedema nearly had a second, exchanging passes on the edge of the area before bursting into the box and seeing her goalbound effort pushed over for a corner.

On 76 minutes it was 5-0 as Little laid the ball across to Nobbs to score a spectacular goal into the right-hand top corner.

Bloodworth netted a sixth after some lovely skill with 11 minutes remaining and Little volleyed home a late seventh, which was harsh on Yeovil.

Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro said: “The simple things impressed me most. In games where you’re dominating possession, players can get out of rhythm and try things that are not on.

“There was some good inter-passing that opened them up, especially in the second half.

“We probably weren’t exposing them in the right areas early enough in the first half, making that one pass too many. We started to be more direct, overloaded in the right areas and found the gaps.

“They had a couple of shots on goal which disappointed us as they came through our mistakes so there’s some things to clean up on.

“We’re keeping clean sheets though and that’s the most important thing at this time of the year.

“The surface is a bit tricky. We had to be more strategic, control the ball more and make sure we go forward with purpose because you can get caught at transition moments when the ball holds up.

“I’m glad she [Jordan Nobbs] got rewarded with the goal but the work she does behind the scenes, her movement and the ability to bring other players into play is fantastic. She’s a special player.”

Arsenal return to Boreham Wood to host West Ham United on Sunday (2pm).
