Angel ABC middleweight prospect Jimmy Fielding returned to the ring to secure the club’s only victory on their open show at the Boston Dome.

Southpaw Fielding had not boxed for over a year, but showed few signs of ring rust as he outpointed J Bresnahan (Danson Youth) over three entertaining rounds at the Tufnell Park venue.

The 21-year-old, who is trained by experienced Angel coaches Ivor “The Engine” Jones and Colin Lake, now has a record of 11 victories in 15 bouts for the club.

The first two rounds against Bresnahan were close affairs, but Fielding stepped up a gear in the final session to clinch a victory that he hopes will set him up for a tilt at the senior ABA Championships later in the year.

Fielding told the Gazette: “I was just pleased to get back in the ring and it was great to record a good win for myself and the club on our own show. I think that I boxed well.

“My work-rate slowed for some reason in the second round, but I turned it on in the third and, although it didn’t happen, a stoppage might have been possible as I really shook him several times.

“I am looking forward to hopefully competing in the ABA Championships and this victory has helped my confidence and put me in a good frame of mind for those championships.”

Fielding’s win was the sole success for Angel, as junior trio Billy Goodway, Jamie Bigglestone and Mark Kurdurovitch were all outscored in their respective bouts.

Goodway was defeated in a lively contest against Pedro ABC’s Celal Ozturk, who boxed skilfully and successfully evaded punches when the Angel boxer came forward.

Ozturk then caught his man with some solid uppercuts when he came within range and the performance was enough to earn the Pedro fighter his second win on a unanimous decision.

Meanwhile, Bigglestone and Kurdurovitch lost on points to K Ahmed (City of London Police) and I Kulane (Fitzroy Lodge) respectively.

The bill also included the North West London Schools’ Championship final, where Islington BC’s Tommy Kerrigan lost to K Tabib (Northolt) on a unanimous decision.

Both fighters opted to slug it out in an intense contest and it was the long arms of Tabib that made the difference, with the Islington man constantly caught as he rushed in.

Islington’s Carlos Moreno was also in action, taking a majority decision against Shafiolah Sahak (Finchley) after producing his best work in the first and third rounds.

Three of Islington BC’s four entrants were victorious on the Five Star ABC show on Saturday, with Malachi Borrell taking the decision against two-time national junior champion Roman Hairari (East London Boxing Academy).

David Katzarov won his debut bout on points against Jack Groves (Cambridge), while Ernie Swindhoe took a unanimous decision over John Mongan (East London Boxing Academy).

Eddie McDonagh was edged out in a close decision to Five Star’s Max Holden, while another Islington junior, Alfie Andrews, defeated Clay Elmes (Bracknell) on a majority in Bognor Regis.
