Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists Jack Wilshere can overcome his latest injury woe and utilise the abundance of talent he has in the future.

The 23-year-old, who has yet to feature for the Gunners this season, was dealt a cruel blow on Tuesday after learning he will require surgery on a hairline fracture in his left leg, which is set to sideline him for around three months.

It is the latest in a long line of setbacks for the England midfielder, who missed the vast majority of the 2014-15 season with a similar injury and may now not return to first-team action until the start of 2016.

But Gunners boss Wenger has been quick to show his support for the midfielder and believes he has the mental strength to bounce back.

He said: “Jack Wilshere is young enough to get over this. I’m confident he can make a career his talent deserves.

“This is not a career-threatening injury for Jack, so I’m very hopeful he will make a full recovery.”

An Arsenal statement read: “Due to a slow healing response from a fracture suffered in August, the club can confirm that Jack Wilshere is to undergo an operation to his left fibula.

“The decision to intervene has been taken quickly after regular reviews by specialists, who feel that Jack’s scans show that the healing process is not progressing as well as expected.

“Jack will have surgery in London in the forthcoming days. This will involve inserting a small plate in his left fibula.

“Jack is likely to be out for approximately three months. Everyone at the club wishes Jack well with his rehabilitation.”
