Former Times ABC star Jules Phillips is in confident mood as he prepares to make his professional debut at York Hall this weekend.

Super-bantamweight Phillips, who turns 22 tomorrow (Friday), takes on Craig Derbyshire over four rounds on the Stephen Goodwin Promotions bill the following night.

Derbyshire – who actually hails from Yorkshire – has lost 12 of his 14 contests to date, but has only been stopped on three occasions.

“He seems quite tough, he’ll keep going and he probably will test me,” Phillips told the Gazette. “He fought Charlie Edwards, who’s just boxed for a world title.

“But I’m confident it shouldn’t be a problem to beat him. He’s moving up in weight and I have to get down to 56kg on the dot, but I’ll easily lose that.

“The build-up to the fight’s gone well. I’ve been so busy – everything seems to be 100mph – but obviously I’m excited and looking forward to it.”

Meanwhile, the undefeated former Islington BC captain Aarron Morgan will return to the ring on Mickey Helliet’s show at York Hall on Saturday October 1, against an opponent yet to be named.
