Islington BC’s Tyrane Wynter overcame Haris Najeeb (Fight For Peace) in the England Youth Championships to set up a repeat of last year’s London final.

Wynter, who wore a Repton vest when he fought Callum Myles (Fitzroy Lodge) in the Under-56kg final a year ago, will be up against the same opponent on Sunday at the TA Centre, Grove Park.

The Islington fighter had to work hard to book his return to the London final, defeating Almari Lewis-Fisher (Hooks) to wrap up the North West London divisional title on Friday.

Making his debut in Islington colours, Wynter dominated each round as he repeatedly caught his opponent with head and body shots and, despite a bizarre split decision, he progressed to Sunday’s London semi-final.

Najeeb, who had received a bye to that stage, looked the fresher of the pair but, although his work-rate was good, he was unable to bring menace to his punches.

Wynter took advantage of the FFP fighter’s low left hand to punish him with a series of overhand rights and his class ultimately told as he secured a unanimous decision.

Islington junior Callum Angel-Taylor triumphed in his first away outing with a win against the previously unbeaten Reece Brundle (Harwich) in Colchester on Friday.

Angel-Taylor looked in control from the start, landing clean shots and countering well with overhand right punches as he enforced a standing count in the opening round.

The Islington fighter continued to dominate the second round and, although he held back in the last, the unanimous points decision in his favour was never in doubt.

Islington BC are holding their first open show of the new year on Thursday at the Boston Dome, Tufnell Park. Doors open at 7pm, with boxing due to get under way an hour later.

Limited standing tickets are available on the door, alternatively contact the club’s events manager Mick Docherty on 07921 724 601.

Times ABC’s Zak Chelli will also be in England Youth Championships action on Sunday as he goes in search of his second successive Under-75 London title.

Chelli, who became a London champion with Dale Youth ABC 12 months ago, took a unanimous decision in his semi-final against Jack King to book his place at the TA Centre this weekend.

Times coach Dave Ryan said: “He boxed really well and let’s hope he does it again on Sunday. Zak’s one of the best kids I’ve ever seen and he’s one that listens as well.”
