Islington youngster Roxanne Fraser enjoyed a winning debut on the Smokey’s BC show at East Tilbury Working Men’s Club last Friday.
The 14-year-old took on Chadwell St Mary’s Courtney Partridge in her first competitive outing at 49kg and recorded a unanimous points victory.
Showing some sign of nerves before the start of the bout, Fraser quickly discovered her composure when the first bell went and boxed well to follow the instructions given to her by coaches Chad Ouzman and Bob Anderson.
Fraser dominated the action throughout and was announced as a unanimous points winner, jumping up and down with happiness when her arm was raised by the referee.
Islington’s Connor Daly became the latest boxer from the club to pass their England Boxing level one coaching course.
The 17-year-old currently boxes at the Hazellville Road club, while also helping to teach the infants and junior academy classes when he isn’t training himself.
He said: “I love boxing and it’s a pleasure to pass on my knowledge to the next generation of champions.
“Coaching is definitely something I want to do once I retire from boxing, I’m young so thankfully that won’t be for a while yet!”
Islington handed out medals and prizes for their infant boxing classes which runs three times per week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons (4.30-5.30pm)
James Connolly won the most improved boxer of the term award for the Tuesday group, while Kadir Cinko was named the best boxer of the term, as James O’Connor took the most improved honours for the Wednesday class and Jagtar Singh Gola walked off with the best boxer prize.
For the Thursday group, the most improved boxer of the term went to Harrison Ozalemdar, as Kaine Khan won the best boxer of the term prize.
Club spokesperson Reggie Hagland said; “It’s been another busy year for the club and we hope to be as active home and away in 2018.
“I’ve been delighted with the emergence of junior boxers that have risen at the club and who have been keen on boxing as much as possible so far this season. “This has been down to the kids putting in a lot of hard work alongside the coaches Barry, Owen, Chad, Zowie and Bob, who have really gelled well together. Good help with coaching is always required.
“At present we have two home shows planned before the end of the season in late June. We’re are hosting an open show at Boston Dome on February 8 and a dinner show on April 27 at Royal National Hotel which will feature a team match against BC Landau of Germany.”
Spaces are available for the five to eight-year-olds for the next set of infant classes from January. Contact Reggie on 07786 080885 for more information.
