Archant

Alan Higgins will feel unlucky after losing his Southern Area Super-Middleweight title in a superb contest with Criag Richards.

The Kentish Town fighter had gone into the bout at York Hall undefeated and after 10 rounds of frantic action there was little to separate the two.

In the end referee Jeff Hinds scored the contest 97-95 in favour of the Crystal Palace man.

Richards carried a height and reach advantage over the former St Pancras ABC boxer.

But Higgins looked the sharper when the pair got in close and a flurry of left jabs and right hooks kept Richards pinned up against the ropes.

The decision could have gone either way but promoter Eddie Hearn, who had Higgins the winner from ringside, told the Gazette that the pair will have a rematch in June.
