Middlesex all-rounder James Fuller had mixed feelings after his stunning 6-28 haul proved in vain in a Vitality Blast T20 defeat at Hampshire.

Fuller’s figures were the best-ever by a Middlesex player in the shortest format and 25th best in the history of the competition.

But his side went down by 21 runs, closing on 163-9 in reply to Hampshire’s 184, and he said: “It was a bittersweet night for me.

“They had a really good start and we were clawing our way back into the game so it was a massive surprise to get a bowl.

“They made a whole lot of mistakes by hitting it in the air. But the damage had been done up top and we should have made more of the chase.

“We haven’t had that really lucky thing happen which have given us confidence as a team.

“If we have one or two teams on the bounce then hopefully we will get on a roll.”

Colin Munro clubbed 60 off 40 balls for the hosts before becoming one of Fuller’s six victims.

And he also nabbed a couple of wickets in Middlesex’s reply, including a caught and bowled effort to dismiss Dwayne Bravo for 38 off 29 balls, as Hampshire claimed their first win this season.

Munro said: “It is very nice to be on the board. We have played some decent cricket but just not in all facets of the game – today it all came along.

“‘Vincey’ got us off to a great start and gave us momentum though the powerplay.

“It was nice to contribute but frustrating to get out when I did. As a team we left 15 or 20 runs out there.

“We haven’t done anything as a top order but tonight I finally contributed.

“Things haven’t gone our way so far but we stuck with it and we got what we deserved.

“We haven’t played badly and showed we had something in the tank – there is a lot of positive stuff to take forward.”
