Dominic Curran struck a brace as Camden & Islington Under-13s secured a fine 3-0 win at Barnet in the second round of the Star Shield at Chase Lodge.

C&I will play Barnet, Hillingdon, Ealing, Brent and Harrow in the 10-game league and enjoyed a positive start when Tyler Ming opened the scoring.

Working possession from back to front, C&I’s patient build-up was rewarded when Charlie Wickham flicked the ball into Ming’s path and he rifled home a good finish on the half-volley.

Aaron Appah and Arnold Mengi both posed a threat in the opening 45 minutes, but C&I would have to wait until after the restart to extend their advantage.

The physical presence and anticipation of Samuel Ababio proved the difference after the break, as he twice intercepted the ball in a four -minute spell to feed Curran, who obliged with two cool finishes.

“Last week we played Hillingdon and had no choice other than to use the game as a trial match,” said C&I manager Jamie Houghton.

“But it at least enabled us to give some new faces an opportunity and has meant we have added some promising boys to an already strong squad.”
