Emery hailed attackers Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after their goals helped the Gunners to a hard-fought triumph at a raucous Cardiff City Stadium.

An 11th minute Shkodran Mustafi goal was cancelled out by an excellent strike from Victor Camarasa on the stroke of half-time.

The Gunners went 2-1 up through a sublime Aubameyang curler before Danny Ward levelled for Neil Warnock’s side.

Emery’s visitors regained the lead with nine minutes remaining through a powerful near post strike by Alexandre Lacazette.

The former PSG boss was quick to praise the pair after the match.

He said: “Lacazette and Aubameyang’s performances helped us [to win]. [I am] very pleased [with the pair].

“They are playing minutes each match and today they started.

“We are continuing to work on the combinations. Today I think the two players scored goals and helped us.

“We can continue to work to find the best performance with each player.

“I spoke with him [Lacazette] because I know him at Lyon. I know he has a big capacity to score in the box and when the team gives him good options.”

Emery admitted his side still have work to do in terms of improving his backline.

He added: “We need to keep improving defensively [even if] we controlled the match 70 per cent.

“The reaction is very important.

“The most important thing is to be calm and to continue working.”
