Lianne Sanderson has credited England coach Mark Sampson with reigniting her enthusiasm for international football after being named in England's World Cup squad.

The Arsenal Ladies forward featured regularly in the national team until 2010, when she fell out with Sampson’s predecessor Hope Powell and missed the World Cup the following year.

But the 27-year-old, who was brought back into the fold after Powell’s sacking in 2013, now has the chance to make amends after her selection for next month’s tournament in Canada was confirmed.

Sanderson was one of five Gunners to be included when the 23-strong squad was announced on Monday, along with defenders Alex Scott and Casey Stoney, midfielder Jordan Nobbs and goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain.

“I love going away with England,” said Sanderson. “I love Mark, I love [assistant] Marieanne Spacey, I love the coaching staff and I feel fully supported when I’m there.

“Since I went back into the team, it’s been a breath of fresh air and Mark has helped me a lot on and off the field. I really can’t thank him enough for that.

“This is a massive year and, having missed out on the last World Cup, I’ll be working harder than ever. I went to America for five years and I’ve been a professional – I know what it means on and off the field.

“When people asked me about World Cup selection, I thought about it and felt hopefully I’d done enough in the last year and a half to prove I was good enough to be there.”

England will be captained by former Arsenal defender Steph Houghton at the World Cup, where they are up against France, Colombia and Mexico in Group F.
