The day after Arsene Wenger’s last game as Arsenal manager has seen a significant shift in the market in who will replace him at The Emirates – with former player Mikel Arteta emerging as the clear 6/4 favourite to become the next Gunners’ boss.
Former favourite Massimiliano Allegri has drifted out to 5/2 following weekend comments suggesting he is likely to remain in Italy as Juventus boss.
Luis Enrique is another contender to have drifted, now out to 9/1 – while another ex-Arsenal midfielder, Patrick Vieira, is still lingering around halfway in the market at 14/1 but looking increasingly unlikely.
Pep Guardiola has also said that he will not stand in the way of Arteta becoming the next Gunners boss.
The 36-year-old former Arsenal midfielder started working with City after retiring from playing two years ago and was a key member of staff during their runaway title success this term.
Guardiola said on Sunday: “What we have done this season, Mikel his contribution was outstanding, amazing, we work together so good.”
“If he stays I will be the happiest guy in the world and if he decides to move because he has this offer, this option, I will not say you do not have to go. I want the best for my friends and he’s a friend of mine.
Arteta is the seventh favourite that the market has had since the Frenchman announced his departure a few weeks ago.
Alan Alger from Betway said: “It’s looking increasingly likely that Mikel Arteta will leave Manchester City and return to the Emirates as the new Arsenal manager. “The betting market has told a very interesting story, one that suggests that Arsenal had much more high-profile names in the frame for the job, but as they fell by the wayside they have latched onto Arteta as a back-up plan.
“He may well become the first candidate in the market to go heavily odds-on by the end of this week”.
