Experienced Swiss defender Stephan Lichtsteiner has expressed his delight at joining Arsenal.

The 34-year-old Swiss captain joined the North London giants from Juventus on Tuesday after lifting seven Serie A titles in a row.

The experienced right-sided defender has played more than 250 appearances for Juve and is the fourth most-capped player in Swiss history with 99 as he prepares to lead his country at this month’s World Cup in Russia.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, a delighted Lichtsteiner said: “Happy and honoured to be a Gunner.

“Will work hard and passionately day in and day out to achieve our sportive objectives and to win trophies with this great club.”

Lichtsteiner has already endeared himself to Gunners fans after being part of the Juve side that knocked out Spurs in the Champions League in March in the round of 16.

The record-capped former Lille player was on the bench but did not play in the first leg when Spurs pulled back a two-goal deficit in Allianz Stadium in Turin to draw 2-2 – a result that left many believing the Lillywhites would ease past Max Allegri’s La Vecchia Signora.

However in the second leg at Wembley, Lichtsteiner – who becomes Unai Emery’s first signing as new head coach – came on in the 61st minute as a replacement for team-mate Medhi Benati, with the Bianconeri 1-0 down after Son Heung-min’s 39 minute goal to put Mauricio Pochettino’s side 1-0 ahead.

But the visitors shocked Spurs – and delighted Arsenal fans everywhere – by equalising 180 seconds after the Gunners new man came onto the pitch.

Gonzalo Higuain struck on 64 minutes before Paulo Dybala huit the winner three minutes after that.

He posted a goodbye to Juve fans on social media after leaving the Serie A giants last month: “It’s time to say thank you to all dear fans, the club and my team mates who in the past seven years have been by my side in this incredible Juventus story.

“A story full of unforgettable moments that I will keep in my heart forever.”
