Rees Jones netted a brace on his debut – but Islington & Camden Under-13s let a two-goal lead slip as they crashed out of the English Schools Trophy, losing 6-2 to Haringey.

The St Aloysius’ College youngster put his side ahead after 15 minutes, collecting a pass from Roger Flores and dispatching it neatly into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot.

Jones added a second goal 10 minutes later when the goalkeeper’s clearance landed at his feet and he lobbed it back into the net from 30 yards out.

But I&C were unable to sustain their momentum and they gave away a penalty that Haringey converted to make it 2-1, before conceding an equaliser 10 minutes from the end of normal time.

And the Islington & Camden boys – who had just one outfield substitute and had to field defender Reece Farrell in goal throughout – looked fatigued during extra time as Haringey scored four more to complete a clear victory.

“I was very impressed with the finishing of Rees Jones – he gives us a bit more strength up front,” said I&C manager Jim de Garis. “There were some positives, but we ran out of steam as the game went on.”

Islington & Camden: Farrell, Jones, Rincon (St Aloysius); Khadrum, Bain, Mowanso, Roberts (Hampstead); Khaleel (William Ellis); Costas (Acland Burghley); Flores, Smith (Holloway); Stephenson (IAMS).
